Blue states could exercise some power. They charter most of the banks in their jurisdiction. They control the airports and ports, as well.

It would require a unified approach by blue states. Blue states run most of the economy and the financial systems. They could use that power to challenge this administration.

None of it is formally legal, but a lot of what Trump is doing isn’t either. One thing that would be achieved would be that the US Treasury markets and stock markets would implode. That might get some attention.

The confrontation is here, and will get more serious. A unified resistance is our only hope.

Expand full comment
Melissa Izquierdo's avatar

I agree. We need to be united. It would be terrific if the Democratic congresspeople also took a united stand putting petty differences aside. Utilize each person's skills and stand firm. Also, a simple, coherent message would be helpful. Stop worrying about re-election when it's not clear whether we will still have elections.

Expand full comment
JazzPaw's avatar

The funding problem is clearly illegal on Trump’s part and Congress and the courts should put a stop to his abuse of power there. Democratic governors and Congressional leadership should be out there threatening the debt ceiling and lots of other retaliation unless he obeys the law.

Immigration, unfortunately, is purely a federal power, and states cannot interfere with enforcement. They can put their people out there to protect their citizens from being falsely arrested. We can peacefully protest. Trump can probably deploy federal enforcement to execute purely federal law and to protect federal property, but not to interfere with our rights under the Bill of Rights.

Right now, Trump is a spoiled child playing with the military like they’re his toy soldiers. If it escalates and our rights are violated, then it’s different, and the military needs to be criticized and have their funding threatened. They are not our police and they are not Donald Trump’s enforcers. That much needs to be made clear. Democrats are not being very clear about their red lines, probably because they are a bunch of academics and social workers who don’t understand power and how to use it.

My view is that this will get gradually worse until the citizens get angry at both parties and at the business community. Then, maybe it will be reigned in.

The Guard has been “federalized”, a dubious concept, apparently legal. The Guard members may stop showing up, but I doubt it.

If blue states want to fight back they will have to join together and act together, regardless of precedent. It’s risky, but a large confrontation would spook the bond market and might make the Feds back down.

Blue states pay the taxes. Without that cash flow, the federal government is busted. Stopping that flow would require strong blue state actions, and that means seizing control of their respective financial systems and not letting go.

Don’t go there unless you intend to win! Democrats don’t have the balls to do this.

I figured that if blue states are able to declare a state of emergency first, our National Guard would be activated for the soul purpose of protecting us from ICE kidnapping and deporting citizens! I had no idea NG could be “federalized”. Thank you for the info. The Regime has already begun withholding funding from blue states. It would be a last resort, but, withholding blue state taxes would help us to survive and screw the regime who is only hoarding all government funding to further enrich themselves anyways! Democrats created this stupid system that rips us off and that Trump is using to terrorize us. Why don’t they use their power to get rid of the taxation in Congress.

Democrats could call for the federal income tax to be repealed. States would required to handle most spending for their own citizens. The federal budget could be funded by assessments paid by state governments, on a per capita basis.

Until Democrats get real about this, I assume this discussion is a ploy to distract us from their fecklessness.

The answer is absolutely and immediately through any legal means, and if there is no clearly legal avenue to do so it should be done anyway and let the courts untangle the mess, for one thing if the idea gets out there broadly the people can refuse to pay their taxes to a government that they disagree with many people on the right including some of the lunatic so-called sovereign citizens may well join in, and the fascist regime in Washington is a long way away from the ability to actually arrest and lock up much less prosecute (which I understand isn't a big concern of theirs, they'd be happy to skip over that part) 10 or 20 or 50 or 100 million of us, and regardless of the success of the effort it would merely help drive home the fact that we cannot function as a nation under our current, well, leadership I guess all the referring to them that way causes gorge to rise in my throat, which might be very useful in recruiting the most important demographic and upcoming elections which are the non-voters.
